Hello, I would like to introduce myself. I am the woman who sits next to you in church and participates in church activities and groups. I am the friendly lady who exercises beside you at the pool and at the YMCA. I am the woman who you see going to the movies with my friends or having coffee at the local restaurant. I am the woman who has Bi-Polar disorder, a form of mental illness.

History of United Way of North Central Iowa

| 1887 - A Priest, 2 Ministers and a Rabbi plan 1st united campaign for 10 health and welfare agencies. That year, in Denver, Colorado, they raised $21,700 and created a movement that would spread throughout the country to become United Way. |
| |
| 1913 - The Nation's 1st modern Community Chest was born in Cleveland, OH. This Community Chest developed the program for allocating funds. |
| |
| 1923 - Mason City organized a Community Chest as a subdivision of the Chamber of Commerce. |
| |
| 1938 - Mason City Community Chest was incorporated and became a separate entity from the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber Secretary continued to serve as the Chest Secretary and Campaign Chair. |

| 1948 - More than 1,000 communities had established United Way organizations. |
| |
| 1965 - The name was changed to Mason City United Fund. New articles of incorporation and by-laws were adopted. |
| |
| 1973 - Again the name was changed to United Way of Mason City. |
| |
| 1974 - A needs assessment was completed and allocations process based on the priority of need was established. |
| |
| 1975 - Mason City was the first city in U.S. of our campaign size to accomplish the allocation process by Priority of Services. |
| |
| 1985 - A special study committee was organized to establish more structure and implement permanent guidelines for the allocation process. Board composition was changed to remove agency representation and limit the number of Board Members to 20. |

| 1988 - The purchase of service system was developed. A needs assessment study was completed to be used for the 1989 Allocation Process. |
| |
| 1991 - The name United Way of North Central Iowa was adopted reflecting the agency's service area and campaign expansion. The area included Butler, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Kossuth, Mitchell, Winnebago and Worth Counties. The Allocation Committee name was changed to the Citizens Review Committee and a needs assessment was completed. |

| 1998 - Joined the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way of American which recognizes donors who contribute $10,000 or more annually. Adopted a Code of Ethics and Planned Giving resolution. New statement of agreement between Partner Agencies and United Way of North Central Iowa was adopted. Outcome Measurement process started and technical assistance begins. First Annual Day of Caring was held. More than 130 volunteers participated in performing service projects throughout the region. |

2000 - New United Way Mission Statement is Approved: United Way of North Central Iowa is:
- Building Communities by Uniting Resources that Serve People
United way of North Central Iowa adopts a new vision statement:
- United Way is a Community Solutions Leader, Improving Lives of North Central Iowans.

| 2006 - Record breaking year raising over $1,302,000. First time Venture Grants are awarded focusing on transportation shelters, Dental Access, Suicide Prevention, Mentoring and Substance Abuse ad campaign. |

| 2007 - Campaign experienced another record breaking year with a campaign reaching $1,390,439. Additional Venture Grants awarded focusing on dental issues, capacity building, and establishment of a community childcare center in Algona. |

| 2008 - United Way celebrates 85 years of caring! The first annual Day of Action (formerly known as Day of Caring) was established to acknowledge that we care all year long. This year, a great flood and devastating tornado hit north central Iowa and United Way became the volunteer coordination center. They had over 300 volunteers from all over the area that helped 130 homes in our 9-county region. Venture Grants continue to impact our area focusing on: Disaster Recovery Fund, Volunteer Solutions (a website to coordinate volunteer opportunities all year round), SED Wraparound and more. |

2009- United Way of North Central Iowa Board of Directors approves new By-Laws to focus on Education, Income, and Health.
A new mission statement is adopted: Helping People, Changing Lives, Building Community.
United Way established Delegation Teams to research and evaluate the needs around each focus area of Education Income and Health. This was a direct response to donors' concerns about funding the same thing every year and not getting impacting results. The group meet bi-monthly to reasearch, prioritize and align the community research to the needs in the community. |

2010-The Delegation Teams continued to research, prioritize and evaluate the needs around Education, Income and Health. Experts were brought in to give a professional position on the work thus far.
The Citizens Review Process was renamed the Community Impact Teams to prepare for process changes that will come from the re-focusing of funds.
In June, United Way conducted community forums around the work of the Delegation Teams. This provided feedback and community perspective to the work of United Way.
June was also the completion of the Delegation Teams and the introduction of a year-round allocations process. The Community Impact Teams began to meet monthly.
Venture Grants Awarded throughout the year include: Entrepreneural for a Day (E4D), Rachel's Challenge, Learn United Summer Camp, and Super Why Summer Reading Camp for Preschool Children. |
